Skating Information

Skating Information & Skate-A-Thon (2025)

In order for your child to have the opportunity to enjoy skating this year, we ask that you read over the following important information.

  • Safety - For safety reasons, all students, staff and parents MUST wear a CSA approved hockey, skateboarding, or skiing/snowboarding helmet.  A bike helmet will not adequately protect all the important areas of your child’s head.
  • Equipment - If your child does not have a helmet or skates, please have your child tell the teacher ahead of time.  We do have extra helmets and skates that may fit your child (approx. 10 extras of each at school).  All students will attend each skating time (students not on the ice will sit in the stands - cheer on others, read a book, or other - no technology).
  • Riding the Bus- For safety reasons, skates must be in a backpack or canvas bag.  Please do not put them in a plastic bag.
  • Parent Involvement: Parents are more than welcome to watch their child skate.  Due to insurance reasons, parents may join their child on the ice as long as they also wear a CSA approved helmet. Due to the large number of students in each grade, strollers and younger siblings/relatives will not be able to go on the ice.
  • Parent Volunteers: Many of our younger students are unable to tie skates.  We can always use additional hands to help tie skates.  Parent volunteers need to confirm with the teacher and school office (principal) that all volunteer forms have been completed; criminal and vulnerable record checks (police station), and child intervention check (provincial building).  If not, please only tie the skates of your own child.  View MHCBE AP 490 for more information.
  • Supervision:  A minimum of 2 adults are needed to be on ice with students (helmet and skates are mandatory).  Please contact your child’s teacher for volunteer interest.   Parents will volunteer checks will be a priority for participation.

Parent Involvement:  Please write a note in your child’s agenda if you’re able to volunteer for the grade level skating time, Skate-A-Thon time, or both times below.  Thank You!
